Psychedelic 3D music video
This video contains six and a half minutes of 3d animation and multimedia compositing. It all started when a friend Evan a.k.a. Tha Fruitbat asked Erica Nelson and I to make a music video for him, almost a year ago.

The video was created using LightWave, SpeedEdit, FinalCut Pro, Flash and Photoshop. Erica and I worked together to green-screen the chicken and pick out stills for the stop-motion animation. Erica was responsible for visuals generated entirely from waveforms of the audio using a flash template that resembles the oscilloscope in my mp3 player. She processed the waveform readouts with the suite of plugins available in FinalCut. Features like the kaleidoscope plugin that would normally be too experimental to use worked perfect with the style we were going for.

I was responsible for the background video, 3d animation, and final comp. The background video is comprised of Digital Juice animations I own. In order to stray from the generic nature these libraries have in their raw form, I reduced their opacity and keyed them in a process I call “quadding”. This basically consists of me flipping four versions of the video plate so they are symmetrical in all four corners. The whole music video is “quadded” with a few exceptions. The result is a complex image with a vortex in the center.

I composited Erica’s effects, the awesome chicken, and my animated 3d objects over the background. Objects often appear chameleon-like since the surfacing matches the background videos. Object morphing is controlled by the audio signal of Evan’s track using LightWave’s audio channel envelope modifier. There’s tessellations, dodecahedrons, and oodles of compositing.

Ancient coastal redwood forest
While living in SF, I had the opportunity to get some footage of Muir Woods, one of my favorite parks in the Bay Area. There’s mossy logs, streams, fern covered hillsides and giant redwood trees.

Entomology Experiments Pt1

Insect analysis art
This is the first video in a series of experimental videos I will be putting online over time. I made the video by using a video microscope and collected insects. The microscope’s rack focus is used to get an interesting effect.

The image seen here is of the back of a moth, right below the thorax and between the wings. The form appears out of place, and after analysis of several websites and photos of moths, I can only assume it is some sort of parasite. (UPDATE: it’s not a parasite, it’s the thorax…) Hopefully more interesting finds like this will come up with further analysis of insects under the microscope!

Vacation rental site redesigned for 2009
This site features beautiful cabins available for rent in Branson. It has been redesigned to allow expandability as more properties are added. There’s been significant changes made to the navigation and look of the site.

I designed the original site in Flash with an optional HTML version. The site now uses JQuery UI accordian to compact the information people want most, right on the first page they see. Click HERE or on the image below to launch the site in a new window and see for yourself.

Hardcore, circuit bent rhythmic noise
This is a split album by Brian VanDerBiest (Uncivilized) and me (Beytah). It was released on Digital Vomit Records at the beginning of March. It could be summed up as video game influenced 8-bit experimental noise.

This album is definitely on the harsher and louder end of the musical spectrum. My tracks use a bent Casio CT-660, and my friend Victor’s circuit bent Speak and Math. Uncivilized used a Gameboy with Nanloloop. I created the album artwork. If you want to download and listen to it, you can click HERE or on the image below to open the download page in a new window.

An Introduction

It gives an introduction to the new site. I briefly go over what I use in the creation of the site and its various contents. I intend to write more in-depth posts about my techniques and tools in the future, but this is a start.

Here’s a few of the core applications I use for media production:

I work with Adobe for all my graphic and web design. Most of the time I use Photoshop, Flash, and Dreamweaver. I use Newtek SpeedEdit for editing video, and LightWave 3D for animation and compositing. For audio production I primarily use Ableton Live, various plugins and hardware.

Along with this blog section, I have integrated my flash portfolio and flash audio pages, which can be reached using the top right navigation. The portfolio page was built last year and acts as an overview of my current projects. it includes graphics, a demo reel, and my resume. The audio page was launched back in 2002 at beytah.com and has evolved over time to include easter eggs, games and other randomness. Check it out and you’ll see what I mean. There’s music videos, downloads, links, and an image gallery.

I use wordpress as the CMS for this site, and I found that problems adapting it into a portfolio were easy to solve. There are various plugins available for wordpress and a codex of information that is invaluable. Web design has an active community of people online sharing their knowledge for free. You can google any question you have about a topic like wordpress and get a valid answer. There’s a wealth of knowledge online to tap into. That’s one of the things I love about web design.

The sliding contact form at the bottom of the page uses JQuery and the wordpress plugin Secure Form Mailer. Other wordpress plugins used in this site include Kimili Flash Embed for easy embedding of flash elements, Favicon Manager for, well, managing favicons, Sociable for social linking thumbnails, and Login LockDown for security.

The nifty MP3 player and oscilloscope at the bottom of the page is coded in actionscript 3 using two tutorials. The player is from Paul at ClockPopMedia, and here is the link to that tutorial. The oscilloscope is from Lee Brimelow’s tutorials at gotoAndLearn. That video tutorial is located here.
